What is a Standing Seam Roofing System?
A Standing Seam roof is a metal roofing system that is usually characterized for its raised interlocking seams. These seams run vertically between panels that allow the metal to expand and contract freely with temperature changes without causing any damages to the roof deck, unlike other roofing materials. Standing Seam roofs offer a modern, sleek appearance, high durability and longevity, often lasting over 50 years! The metal panels have a large variety of colors and finishes to choose from! We get all of our metal panels made by RLS Metals and they get the metal coils to create the panels from Drexel Metals!
Benefits of a Standing Seam Roofing System
Standing Seam is very durable and can last 50 plus years!
Can be energy efficient by reflecting sunlight which reduces heat absorption-can be helpful when cooling down your house in the summer.
Standing Seam can withstand extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, snow and high winds.
A Standing Seam Roofing System needs little to no maintenance over its lifespan which can save you time and money!
Standing Seam Metals is a sustainable material and can be recycled after its lifespan.
Resistant to pests and rodents- the metal helps keep out bugs and rodents are unable to tear up metal roofing materials unlike asphalt shingles.
A Standing Seam Roofing System can increase your curb appeal! Metal is in high-demand so by having a Standing Seam Roofing System on your home or business can increase your property and resell value!
Fire resistant-can provide an extra layer of protection
Mechanical Lock
Mechanically-seamed metal roofs have vertical legs that line up with each other. They are seamed together with a hand or electric seaming tool.
There are two types of mechanical seam profiles used on Standing Seam Roofs: Single Lock and Double Lock.
A single lock is only folded over one time so the seam is 90 degrees.
Double lock seams are folded over twice (180 degrees). They are better used for low-pitch roofs that may need to be extra weathertight.
There are three mechanical lock profiles you can choose: DMC 100SS, DMC 150SS, and DMC 200S
Snap Lock
Snap Lock panels are another common type of a Standing Seam panel profile. The panels have a male and female leg that snap together.
Unlike a mechanical lock panel profile, this type does not need a hand or electric seaming tool to connect the panel legs.
Snap Lock panels are typically easier and faster to install since you do not need to use a seaming tool on each panel seam.
When using a Snap Lock panel you have to make sure both legs are securely snapped into place all the way up the seam.
There are many Snap Lock profiles to choose from but the most commonly used is the DMC 150SL.
